I;ve been told 3D Studio Max is the most forgiving of the basic 3 3D design programs (3Ds Max, Maya, SoftImage XSI) Maya has a brutal learning curve, so does Softimage. If you wanna try something REALLY different, look into an app called Mudbox. It's basically like digital clay sculpting, and is quite robust.
