Design Tutorial: CSS Layout The Right Way

A number of months ago when I was still learning CSS, I published a tutorial called “Simple CSS Layout” in which I demonstrated how easy it is to create the simplest type of web layout using a technique called absolute positioning. It is now a year on and, while none of the information in that video was incorrect, the method I showed is not the best for a fixed-width layout because it ignores the flow of HTML, wouldn’t be recognized in industry and doesn’t adapt well to different screen resolutions. With that in mind, in this video, I step you through the “right way” of doing it using a CSS attribute called float. So, bring a blank document in your favorite code editor and we’ll get started.

Web Design 101 – Floats intro

HTML/CSS website design tutorial introducing CSS floats. They’re extremely important to learn. They are an easy way to create multiple columns and create image galleries and more.

You could also use them to wrap text around the shape of an image. All you do is float the image left.

“The float property specifies whether or not a box (an element) should float.”

Possible values are – left, right, none, inherit.

USAGE:

Website Design Theme Application Tutorial Using PHP Cookies to Change CSS Style Sheets

Learn how to allow visitors to change the themes of your website using CSS Style Sheets and PHP Cookies.

It uses PHP Cookies and well structured CSS style folders and style sheets to allow any visitors to theme your website according to layouts you have made.

If your style sheet is set up smart your buttons, background, backgrounds for tables and divs, size of things, placement of things, and everything can be changed by altering each theme’s style sheet.

Using PHP cookies we can store their theme choice in a cookie file inside their browser software so even when they close their browser down, the next time they come back their theme is in place as long as the cookie is set to last. If the user deletes all cookies from within their browser options, the theme will revert back to your original site theme.
