Internet Marketing Basics: Split-Testing
One of the most powerful tools for just about any Internet business to use is known as split testing. The basic concept of split-testing is quite simple: Create two different variants of a website and then find out which one performs better (i.e. which one gets more clicks or more sales or whatever).
Here’s a simple example to illustrate a split-test: Let’s assume that we want to test a squeeze page, where the goal is to get people’s e-mail addresses and their permission to send additional information (this way, you can sell them your products or services down the line). One possible thing to test would be video versus text. In this case, you’d create two versions of your squeeze page, one with text explaining the benefits of signing up and the other with a video, detailing those same benefits. Next, you need to make sure that half of the visitors to your website will see the text-squeeze page and the other half will see the video-squeeze page. To do this, you need to run some kind of script. There are many ways to rotate pages or split up the traffic to two different redirects and the technicalities of split-testing aren’t that important. The only thing you need to know is: Get some kind of a program for split testing.
Once you’ve taken care of the flow of visitors coming to your site and made sure they get split up to view the different variations of your page, you need to start measuring the performance of each of the split-variations. For this example, the performance of the page is determined by how many people sign up by entering their e-mail address. Whatever split-testing tool you use will also offer some way of measuring performance, for instance by tracking the clicks on the page or by inserting a piece of script on the thank you page.
For html sites, one option is to use the free split testing service by Google. For WordPress websites, the best option is a plugin called WP Split Test.

Once you’ve gotten an adequate amount of visitors (one hundred and above, for a split-test with two versions), you’ll see clearly which split-variation is performing best. For example, if each version has received 50 visitors and on one version, 10 people signed up while on the other version 17 people signed up, you have a clear winner. Now you can ditch the worse performing version of the page and test the winner against a new variation.
Split testing can increase the performance of a website substantially and anything from a few percent in enhanced performance to increasing income by a multitude is possible. It’s not unheard of that a website owner managed to double their sign-ups simply by changing some small element of their squeeze page. What’s more: Split testing is quite easy to do and all you need to invest are a few bucks for a split-testing script! Outside of the Internet, no business has such a powerful tool at it’s disposal (imagine trying to test two different versions of a store-front for a bricks-and-mortars store!).
